The Center for Racial Justice and Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers invites you to our new reading group, the Pajaro Valley Community Book Club (PVCBC)! PVCBS is a book club that focuses on labor history, worker solidarity, social justice movements, and class struggles as they relate to the Pajaro Valley. Please join us for discussions on shared readings, food, and some good old-fashioned community building!
Our first session will focus on chapters 1-5 of Peter Shapiro’s Song of the Stubborn One Thousand: The Watsonville Canning Strike, 1985-87. The book covers the strike led by the predominantly Latino and Filipino women workers at the Watsonville canneries. Some of its themes are their struggle for better wages, working conditions, and union recognition against the broader social and political context of labor movements in the United States and global neoliberal restructuring at that time. The book highlights the persistence and solidarity of the workers who were up against corporate interests and entrenched local political interests.
