Santa Cruz Black Presents: Black on Screen

The 2025 Film Series: Premieres Juneteenth Week (June 17 @Capitola Library, June 19 @RCNV)

  • Starting in July screenings will be 3rd Tuesdays @ Capitola Library & 3rd Wednesdays @ Resource Center for Nonviolence
  • Movie times begin at 6:00pm

We’ll be screening Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, directed by Johan Grimonprez. Nominated for the 2025 Best Documentary Feature, this film examines the cold war episode when sixteen decolonizing African nations were admitted into the United Nations, only to be subjected to Western neocolonial and psychological warfare tactics. During a time of lingering Jim Crow, the United States deployed Black jazz musicians as part of an anticommunist global culture war, while supporting the overthrow of Lumumba and Congolese sovereignty, the assassination of Malcolm X, and police repression domestically. This is 150 minutes of world history. We hope to see you at one of our two screenings: Tuesday, 6/17, at the Capitola Library, George Ow room and Thursday, 6/19, at the Resource Center for Nonviolence.  We will offer light refreshments before the film and a discussion post screening. Doors open at 5:30 pm, and the screening starts at 6 pm.

Our BLACK on Screen Film Series 2025 will resume its usual format in July with film screenings in the 3rd week of each month Wednesdays @ RCNV and Tuesdays @ Capitola Library with a 6/6:30 pm time slot.
